COMMUNITY LEADERS JOIN FORCES
TO DEMAND RESPONSIVE, ACCOUNTABLE CITY GOVERNMENT
Group Cites Failures of Vision, Leadership and Inclusiveness
AUSTIN, Texas, January 8, 2008 - Better Austin Today called on citizens Tuesday to demand a responsive, inclusive government that will comprehensively address the critical issues facing Austin.
"The vision just isn't there and the process is broken," said Fred Lewis, an attorney with Texans Together. "There is a widespread consensus that city leaders must be held accountable."
Beginning with the May election, Better Austin Today will endorse and support candidates for office who are committed to inclusive, responsive government and who share the group's vision for Austin. The group will also act as a long-term force to hold officials accountable for acting in the public interest.
Better Austin Today brings together leaders from a broad, diverse group of community groups.
"We all come to the table with our own issues, but we share fundamental principles," said Marcelo Tafoya, with the League of United Latin American Citizens. "Chief among them, Austin has an urgent need for a champion of the public interest that can hold elected officials accountable."
Better Austin Today has a comprehensive, progressive vision for the city. The group wants public involvement in City policy, growth management, affordability, social issues, the environment, protecting neighborhoods, fiscal responsibility and protecting Austin's uniqueness.
Citizens interested in learning more about Better Austin Today are invited to the group's fundraiser on Sunday, January 13 from 6:00-9:00pm at the Moose Lodge (2103 EM Franklin, between MLK and Manor Road). Donations in any amount are appreciated and will help fund the group's efforts to elect candidates to office.
