FUNDRAISER TO SUPPORT EFFORT DEMANDING RESPONSIVE, ACCOUNTABLE CITY GOVERNMENT
AUSTIN, Texas, February 24, 2008 - Better Austin Today holds its second "fun-raiser" at Jovita's tonight to gain support for its effort to fix what many term a "broken process" at City Hall.
Members of the recently-formed political action committee, representing a broad range of interests, have been tirelessly working since the first, extremely successful fundraiser to build a sustainable organization that seeks to hold officials accountable for acting in the public interest. Mary Arnold, Better Austin Today board member, said of the first event, "it was wonderful to see such a diverse group of people come together in support of making real change in Austin."
Yesterday, members spent 10 hours interviewing council candidates and deliberating on endorsements. While decisions still hang in the balance, many in the group noted their optimism for the future of Better Austin Today due to their positive experience with the process. Endorsement announcements are expected March 6 and endorsements will required a 60% vote of the board members.
"We
hope to change the minds and policy positions of those whose track
records don't reflect responsiveness to the people. Where we find we
can change neither minds nor policies, we will work to elect new
leaders committed to serving the public good." Clint Smith, Better Austin Today board member
